The lower end of Rue Mouffetard is especially good for food shopping, with market stalls and small shops clustered around the area near the Church of Saint-Médard. From there, the street climbs gently uphill toward Place de la Contrescarpe, a small square with café terraces, a fountain and lots of local activity throughout the day. It’s a good spot to pause for coffee or lunch, and it also brings you into the literary history of the neighborhood. There are plenty of details to notice along Rue Mouffetard, too. Look for the ornate sgraffito façade decorated with flowers and countryside scenes, as well as old shopfronts and painted signs that hint at the street’s long history. At the lower end of the street, Saint-Médard is worth a closer look. With origins reaching back to the 12th century, the church is a reminder that Rue Mouffetard has long been part of daily life on the Left Bank – not simply a pretty market street.

For another local market experience, Marché Monge is close by on Place Monge. Open on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, this open-air market has been part of the neighborhood for generations and offers produce, cheese, flowers, fish, meat, wine and all the little extras that make shopping in Paris so enjoyable. In one direction from Jacquere, the Luxembourg Gardens are close enough for an easy walk. This is one of the great pleasures of staying in this part of Paris: being able to set out from home and soon find yourself among the tree-lined paths, fountains, flowerbeds and green chairs of one of the city’s most beloved gardens. It’s beautiful in every season and especially nice for those moments when you want a break from museums, monuments and busy streets.

In the other direction, the Jardin des Plantes offers a very different kind of garden experience. With its botanical gardens, historic glasshouses, Natural History Museum and Ménagerie, it’s a favorite for families, garden lovers and anyone who enjoys combining a walk with a bit of culture. It also connects naturally with the history of the 5th arrondissement as a place of learning, science and discovery.

From Jacquere, you’re also not far from the Panthéon, one of the great landmarks of the Latin Quarter. But the walk there is part of the experience, passing through streets shaped by centuries of students, writers, artists and thinkers. Around the Panthéon, you’ll find cafés, bookshops, university buildings and Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, one of the most beautiful churches in Paris.
